Echo Spark Consulting is based in the unceded territories of the Piscataway, Nacotchtank, and Manahoac tribes.
The Manahoac, who lived in what is now called Northern Virginia, disappeared from the historical record around 1728.
The name Nacotchtank derives from anaquashatanik, or “town of traders.” They were last recorded in the late 1600s, having had their territory reduced to just Theodore Roosevelt Island (then called Anacostine) in the Potomac River.
The Piscataway peoples – a confederacy of smaller groups – are still present on their lands today, although settler colonizers have taken over much of what is now called central Maryland. Their name means “the people where the rivers blend.” To learn more, please visit:
